Islip, NY – A historic winter storm Monday, February 23 brought a record-breaking 31 inches of snow to Long Island MacArthur Airport, the highest snowfall ever recorded there. From the moment the storm began, the Town of Islip mobilized a full-scale response to keep residents safe and roads passable.
More than 300 pieces of equipment were deployed, covering approximately 1,200 miles of town roads, roughly the distance from Islip to Daytona Beach, Florida. Crews worked around the clock plowing and clearing snow to ensure emergency access and restore normal travel as quickly as possible.
"Our highway crews have been working tirelessly through extreme, white-out conditions to protect our community," said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. "We are grateful for their dedication and ask residents' for patience as we continue clearing remaining roads and intersections."
DPW Commissioner Tom Owens added, "This was a massive storm by any measure. Our teams began preparations days in advance and have not stopped since the first flakes fell. We will continue operations until every road in the Town of Islip is safe and passable."
Residents are reminded to move vehicles from roadways, when possible, clear fire hydrants near their homes, clear sidewalks, and check on neighbors who may need assistance. Property owners and business operators may be subject to fines for non-compliance.
The Town of Islip remains committed to doing everything possible to keep our community safe during this historic weather event.
