A Message from the Supervisor

“Welcome to Islip, the 3rd largest town in New York State, but with an endearing small town feel. We are so proud of our town…our beaches, golf courses, marinas, parks, housing opportunities for all, businesses, industrial parks, healthcare and educational institutions including our own Islip MacArthur Airport that provides many job opportunities. I sincerely hope you find this website helpful.” Angie

Floodplain Management & National Flood Insurance Program

The Town of Islip is a coastal community with a great deal of interest in managing our floodplain and providing support to the residents potentially affected by a storm event in our area. The Town's Code provides the foundation for the defense of our coastal communities and sets the parameters for the health and resilience of the Town. You can view the Town Code at: https://islipny.gov/government/town-code for a more detailed understanding of floodplain management.

The primary objective of these floodplain ordinances is to protect human life, as well as:
  1. Minimize the expenditure of public funds for costly flood control projects.
  2. Minimize the need for rescue and relief efforts.
  3. Minimize prolonged business interruptions.
  4. Minimize the damage to public facilities and utilities.

The below is provided as a gateway to keep residents informed and updated on the latest information regarding the floodplain, flood insurance, as well as how to best prepare for flooding events.

Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA)

The Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) is the area of the highest risk in Zones A and V on the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) primarily in coastal areas of the Great South Bay and Fire Island. To determine your property’s flood zone classification, see the links provided below.
The Flood Zone Determination Request Form is a courtesy provided by the Town of Islip to assist a property owner in identifying the flood zone of their property. Fill out the form and submit to the Planning Division at the Town for determination. The second link, Am I in a Flood Zone, provides a visual of the Flood Insurance Rate Map, and will allow residents to view a visual depiction of their property. Click Here to follow the instructions.

National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

The Town of Islip has been a member of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) since 1972. The program was established to enable property owners in participating communities to purchase flood insurance as protection against flood losses. Click the below links for more information on the NFIP and the importance of flood insurance.
