A Message from the Supervisor

“Welcome to Islip, the 3rd largest town in New York State, but with an endearing small town feel. We are so proud of our town…our beaches, golf courses, marinas, parks, housing opportunities for all, businesses, industrial parks, healthcare and educational institutions including our own Islip MacArthur Airport that provides many job opportunities. I sincerely hope you find this website helpful.” Angie

The Department of Public Works, is responsible for a variety of services, including the maintenance of over 1,200 miles of roadway, maintaining 58 Town building and facilities, maintenance of Town owned sumps, and removal and maintenance of trees located in the Town right-of-way.

Highway Division

The principal responsibilities of the Highway Division are road maintenance and repair, snow, ice and flood control, as well as the operation of public parking lots. Maintenance of town roadways includes the repair of pot holes, crack filling and seal coating of pavement, shoulder maintenance and vegetation control, litter pickup, roadway sweeping and drainage.  This division also operates two state of the art Brine making facilities for pre-treating roads prior to snow events. Please call (631) 224-5600 for more information.

What is Brine?
Brine is a salt and water solution that when combined with the appropriate ratio (23% salt / 77% water) is a very effective snow fighting tool.  Although salt brine's freezing temperature is not as low as calcium chloride's (salt brine freezes at about -6 degrees Fahrenheit), salt brine has a much lower freezing temperature than salt alone. In addition, when ice and snow are gone, salt brine leaves a dry pavement. Finally, salt brine costs only about 12 cents per gallon, a considerable savings over calcium chloride. Some of the benefits to using brine are the anti-icing technique resulted in clearer pavements, thus improving motorist safety. The environment is less affected, as fewer chemicals were used.
